Carver College of Medicine receives $190,000 IMS gift
Posted August 11, 2003
IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine recently received a gift of $190,000 from the Iowa Medical Society in conjunction with the IMS Education Fund.
Since 2001, the IMS Scholars Program, which replaced a similar student loan fund, has worked to raise funds for scholarships that will encourage students to pursue careers in medicine.
The IMS gift for scholarships in the Carver College of Medicine was made through the UI Foundation.
The IMS Education Fund is partnering with the UI Foundation to establish a $3 million endowment fund for the scholarship program on behalf of the Iowa physicians and corporations who generously contribute to this cause, said Deb Potter, IMS manager of financial affairs. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2003.
"Our goal in establishing a pure scholarship fund is to keep the best and brightest students in medicine. You never know who will find the cure to a major medical illness or who will want to dedicate themselves to helping others," Potter said.
This gift from IMS is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
