Charitable arm of Rockwell Collins gives $100,000 to UI Engineering

Posted December 4, 2003

IOWA CITY -- Students and faculty in the University of Iowa College of Engineering will benefit from technology upgrades and program enhancements made possible by a recent $100,000 gift commitment from the Rockwell Collins Charitable Corporation to the UI Foundation.

"Rockwell Collins has been one of the college's most supportive Iowa corporate partners," said P. Barry Butler, dean of the UI College of Engineering. "For years, the company has hired our students as co-ops, interns and full-time engineering professionals. It has provided scholarships, mentors for students, guest lecturers, counselors to the college and research support.

"With this generous gift, the college is now able to make major technology and program enhancements that can make a significant difference in the level of education our students will experience," Butler added. "We are truly honored by Rockwell Collins's display of confidence in our educational mission."

A large conference room in the UI Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences will be named for Rockwell Collins in recognition of this gift.

In 35 years of giving, Rockwell Collins has contributed more than $1.3 million to a variety of UI programs.

Rockwell Collins makes charitable contributions to a variety of nonprofit organizations in the United States and around the world. The Rockwell Collins Charitable Corporation makes grants for programs and initiatives; its giving priorities include education and arts and culture, with an emphasis in youth development.

This gift from Rockwell Collins is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
