Lentz is appointed to Hamilton Professorship of Hematology

IOWA CITY -- Steven Lentz, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been appointed to the Henry Hamilton Professorship of Hematology. The endowed professorship honors Henry Hamilton, M.D., a professor of internal medicine whose connection with the UI spanned nearly 50 years as both a student and faculty member. Hamilton died in 1986. The professorship was established through the UI Foundation by a bequest from the estate of John and Oral Sebelin of Davenport. Lentz, who joined the UI faculty in 1992, studies vascular biology -- how blood vessels function under diseased or injured conditions. He primarily treats patients with hemophilia or blood-clotting problems and patients with blood-related cancers through the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI. He also is a staff physician with the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Lentz earned a bachelor of science degree in 1979 from Iowa State University and a doctorate in molecular biology and a medical degree in 1985 through the Medical Scientist Training Program at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at Washington University. Hamilton pioneered research in how red blood cells survive. He also was known for excellence in teaching, four times named Teacher of the Year by UI medical students. Hamilton earned a bachelor of science degree from the UI in 1939 and a medical degree also from the UI in 1941. "This professorship gives Dr. Lentz and, by extension, our division, the opportunity to carry on the type of ground-breaking work that Dr. Henry Hamilton made a standard," said Raymond Hohl, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine and pharmacology and head of the UI Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation. "Dr. Lentz is an outstanding choice for this honor, and we are grateful for the support made possible by the combined legacy of Dr. Hamilton and the Sebelins." John Sebelin credited Henry Hamilton with saving his life, and Sebelin was under Hamilton's medical care for approximately 10 years until Sebelin's death in 1969. Oral Sebelin received a bachelor's degree in education from the UI in 1922. She died in 1986.
