Old Capitol dome returns to campus skyline

A new dome rises

Old Capitol in flames
(November 20, 2001)

Posted February 24, 2003

Contractors lifted a new 6-ton dome atop the Old Capitol building in the University of Iowa's Pentacrest on Monday, February 24.

The new dome, which is a replica of the original that was destroyed in a $6 million fire on November 20, 2001, is gilded with $8,000 of gold leaf imported from Italy.

The links shown below provide additional information about this exciting event.

UI Foundation photographers Tom Langdon and Jill Michka braved the frigid February weather to shoot photos of the dome raising. Jill covered the event from ground level, while Tom's photos were taken high above the scene from the roof of Schaeffer Hall.

Enjoy the dome raising as seen through their lenses.
