IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program has announced fall 2002 semester award recipients of its Dr. Eunice Schuytema Beam WISE Travel Grant Program.

The award winners, each of whom received $250 toward travel to a professional meeting to present scholarly work, are:

• Alina Bejan of Iasi, Romania, a computer science doctoral student in the Graduate College, who presented her paper, "Peer-to-Peer Cooperative Driving," at the 17th International Symposium on Computer and Information Sciences (ISCIS XVII) at the University of Central Florida, Orlando in October 2002.
• Xuemei Chen of Shandong, China, a chemistry doctoral student in the Graduate College, who presented her paper, "Synthesis and Bioactivity of Phosphonate Analogues of Cytosine Arabinoside Monophosphate," at the 224th American Chemical Society National Meeting in Boston, Mass. in August 2002.
• Heather Quevedo of Coralville, Iowa, a geoscience doctoral student in the Graduate College, who presented her paper, "An Exceptional High-Resolution Stable Isotope Record of the Last Deglaciation from NW New Jersey," at the Geological Society of America national conference in Denver in October 2002.

The travel grant program is made possible by a 2002 gift from Eunice Schuytema Beam, who received her doctorate in microbiology from the University of Iowa in 1956. She later taught at Chicago's Rush Medical College and served as assistant dean of the college until her retirement in 1985. She currently resides in Naples, Fla.

The UI Women in Science and Engineering Program cooperates with science, mathematics, engineering and technology programs at the University of Iowa to increase the participation and advancement of women as students, faculty and professional staff. The program integrates the ideas, strengths and approaches of women into research, teaching and service while promoting a supportive environment for women to study and work.

The travel grants are awarded during fall and spring semesters following the schedule and guidelines found on the WISE Website at www.uiowa.edu/~wise/grads/travelgrants.htm.

The Beam gift is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
