UI Presidential Scholarships awarded

Posted March 20, 2003

IOWA CITY -- Fifty University of Iowa incoming freshmen will receive a Presidential Scholarship for the 2003-2004 academic year. The awards, all of which are partially or wholly funded by private gifts, are the most prestigious honor given to entering freshmen.

Recipients were chosen from a field of almost 600 top-ranking high school seniors from all over the country. Presidential Scholarships are awarded on the basis of high school rank, grade point average, college entrance exam scores, performance on the essay portion of the application, and high school or community service and leadership. The award is $7,000 per year or $28,000 over four years.

Creating 100 new Presidential Scholarships, each of which requires a minimum endowment of $150,000, is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
