Guardsmark gift to establish Hawley visitorship, lecture at UI Disability Law Center

IOWA CITY -- A $50,000 gift from Guardsmark LLC has established the Alan Ross Hawley Distinguished Visitorship and Lecture at the Law, Health Policy and Disability Center in the University of Iowa College of Law. Hawley, who died on Feb. 18, graduated from the UI in 1948 with an undergraduate degree in political science and from the Iowa Law School in 1950. He had a distinguished career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), after which he worked for more than 30 years in various senior management positions, including as general counsel at Guardsmark. With executive headquarters in New York City, Guardsmark is one of the world's largest security services firms. It was founded in 1963. "The annual Hawley Distinguished Visitorship and Lecture will commemorate the important contribution of Alan Ross Hawley to the University of Iowa as an undergraduate and law student, and as a distinguished alumnus," said Guardsmark President Ira A. Lipman. "The Hawley visitor and lecture series will support distinguished leaders in ways that help educate the next generation of professionals who will influence Iowa and national public policy through their work." Peter Blanck, Charles M. and Marion Kierscht Professor of Law and director of the UI's disability law center, said, "Guardsmark has long been regarded as the gold standard in the security services industry, and Alan Ross Hawley's storied career in the FBI and at Guardsmark was similarly distinguished. "The Hawley Visitorship and Lecture will further the reach of the center and its unique partnerships with the UI's Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Education and Public Health to promote multidisciplinary approaches to undergraduate and graduate education and outreach," Blanck added. The UI Law, Health Policy and Disability Center focuses on improving the quality of life for persons living with disabilities through initiatives in law, education, technology and research. Based at the UI College of Law, with satellite offices in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, the center concentrates on public policy and its impact on persons with disabilities.
