UI Foundation receives $125,000 gift

IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa Foundation has received a $125,000 contribution from the John Deere Foundation to support projects in the UI colleges of business, engineering, public health and liberal arts and sciences, and in the computer science and accounting departments. The funding is designated for scholarships, particularly for minorities and women, and for student and faculty development. UI President David J. Skorton visited with Deere officials at Deere & Company's headquarters in Moline, Ill., yesterday to thank them for their support of the university. "The Deere Foundation's steadfast support provides University of Iowa students an opportunity to pursue academic excellence as they prepare to become the business leaders of tomorrow," Skorton said. "The University is extremely grateful to Deere for its partnership" The University of Iowa has received funding for 39 consecutive years from Deere, as the two organizations have continued in their commitment to the development of women and minorities in business and technologies. The contributions provide scholarship funding to assist in recruiting some of the best and brightest women and minority scholars. "Through this charitable gift, the John Deere Foundation continues to express its support for the University of Iowa," said James H. Collins, Deere & Company's director of community relations. "Through these charitable gifts, the Deere Foundation has encouraged the university to continue in its efforts to develop professional leaders for the future of private enterprise." The John Deere Foundation has also provided funding for other UI programs. For example, it provides sponsorship of the business-writing program at the Tippie College of Business. Additionally, John Deere has been involved with the university in research, development and leadership support. The John Deere Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of Deere & Company, invests in programs in education, health and human services, community improvement, and arts and culture. The John Deere Foundation's gift is is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
