Van Voorhis appointed to Chapler Professorship in Reproductive Endocrinology

IOWA CITY -- Bradley Van Voorhis, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been appointed to the F.K. "Ted" Chapler Professorship in Reproductive Endocrinology. The endowed professorship honors Ted Chapler, M.D., UI professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology, who is known nationally as one of the best clinical teachers in reproductive medicine. The professorship was established through the UI Foundation by gifts from colleagues, former colleagues, friends and family. Van Voorhis, who has been director of the UI Division of Reproductive Endocrinology since July 1997, is the first appointee to the professorship. The appointment is for three years, at which time the appointment can be renewed or a new recipient be selected. "Dr. Van Voorhis was the unanimous nominee from the division to best exemplify the superior tradition of teaching established by Dr. Chapler," said Jennifer Niebyl, M.D., UI professor and head of obstetrics and gynecology. "The Chapler Professorship will ensure that we continue Ted's tradition of excellence in clinical education in reproductive endocrinology." Van Voorhis has been a UI faculty member since 1990. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University in 1981 and a medical degree from the UI in 1984. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School. Chapler, who was on the UI faculty from 1970 to 1999, was named six times as a College of Medicine Teacher of the Year and received many other teaching awards. He earned bachelor of science and medical degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and completed a residency at the University of California of San Francisco Hospital (now Medical Center).
