IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa Alumni Association has made a $1 million commitment from its independently generated revenue for the university's planned Pomerantz Center, a comprehensive facility that will provide a breadth of academic, career and recruiting resources for prospective and current students and alumni.
This commitment, which comes from royalties the Alumni Association receives through its MBNA affinity credit-card program, will help fund the $17.6 million building, which is scheduled to open in 2005.
"I hope our alumni who use a UI Alumni Association credit card will be proud to know that their participation in this program is helping to support such an important and versatile building on the University of Iowa campus," said Vince Nelson, president of the UI Alumni Association.

Funded in large part by a $10 million naming gift from Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz of Des Moines, the 70,000-square-foot Pomerantz Center is now under construction across from the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Market Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, in the heart of the UI campus.
The facility mainly will serve students in the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It also will house a variety of career-related services for UI students, including the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the Admission Visitors Center, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network and the Academic Advising Center.
"It is very fitting for the association -- through the participation of alumni -- to support a building that will advance its mission of enhancing students' total UI experiences, from admission to graduation and beyond," said UI President David J. Skorton.

The Alumni Association's commitment will be completed over a five-year period and is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
