Pomerantz Center ceremony honors namesakes

Posted October 8, 2003

IOWA CITY -- At the October 3, 2003, meeting of the Board of Visitors of the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business, board members and other special guests paid tribute to one of the college's most generous alumni for a gift that will benefit UI students and graduates, and the state of Iowa for years to come.

Marvin Pomerantz (1952 B.B.A.) and his wife, Rose Lee, made a $10 million commitment to the UI Foundation to help build the Pomerantz Center (learn more about the center), a 70,000-square-foot facility now under construction across Market Street from the Pappajohn Business Building.

The $17.6 million project, which is scheduled for completion in 2005, will house the UI's Admission Visitors Center, the Academic Advising Center, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network, and the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program.

Speakers at the October 3 event included Gary Fethke, dean of the UI business school; Linda Maxson, dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; UI President David Skorton; and UI Foundation President Michael New. President Skorton presented the Pomerantzs with a rendering of the new building and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the entire University. Marvin Pomerantz briefly addressed the group, citing his love for the UI and all it has meant to his life and his family.

In addition to his involvement with the Tippie College's Board of Visitors, Marvin Pomerantz is a member of the UI Foundation Board of Directors and is co-chair of the National Campaign Steering Committee for the UI's $850 million Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign.

The Pomerantz Center is a facilities project in the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the University, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
