Davenport math teacher creates University of Iowa scholarship

IOWA CITY -- Joann M. Stuhr of Davenport, Iowa, through a $250,000 gift commitment to the University of Iowa Foundation, has created a graduate scholarship at the University of Iowa designed to help Iowa high school mathematics instructors become better teachers through advanced education. The Joann Stuhr Scholarship for High School Mathematics Teachers in Iowa will be awarded to Iowa teachers with at least three years' classroom experience who wish to earn a master of science in mathematics degree or a master of arts in mathematics education degree from the UI. "This is great for mathematics education in the state of Iowa, because the more advanced knowledge teachers have, the more they'll be able to bring to their students' classroom experiences. In addition, it's valuable to our department to be able to learn from high school teachers about their work in the field," said David Manderscheid, chair of the UI Department of Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "We are very grateful to Ms. Stuhr for her gift." Manderscheid said the first Stuhr Scholarship will be awarded for the fall 2004 semester. Stuhr, an Iowa native, has been a mathematics teacher for many years, including almost 30 years at Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa. She has also taught in Burlington, Iowa; Utica, New York; Japan and Germany. Stuhr received the Presidential Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics in the State of Iowa in 1991, 1992 and 1995. She has been published numerous times in the Journal of the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and has been a frequent presenter at local, state and regional conferences of mathematics teachers. Stuhr earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1959. Under the auspices of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Academic Year Institute, she also earned a master's degree in mathematics from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1965. In addition, she has studied at several summer institutes related to mathematics education. "This scholarship will provide opportunities for mathematics teachers in Iowa much as I received with the NSF Academic Year Institute," said Stuhr in explaining her motivation for the gift. "My hope is to help maintain high standards for mathematics education in the state of Iowa. The quality and depth of the UI's mathematics and mathematics education programs made the UI a natural choice when considering my gift." The Stuhr gift is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best.
