Swan named Wheeler Faculty Fellow of Engineering

IOWA CITY -- Colby C. Swan, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and researcher in the Center for Computer Aided Design in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been appointed Robert and Virginia Wheeler Faculty Fellow of Engineering. Swan has research expertise in composite materials, computational solid mechanics and structural topology optimization. His current research focuses on structural composites, clothing modeling for virtual humans, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and bone adaptation phenomena. Swan received his doctorate in 1993 in civil engineering from Princeton University. He is a member of the American Society for Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute for Aeronautics and Avionics, U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics, and the International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. The Robert and Virginia Wheeler Faculty Fellowship in Engineering was established in 2003 through a gift to the University of Iowa Foundation from the estate of Robert Wheeler and his wife, Virginia. Born in New York in 1922, Wheeler earned his bachelor's degree in 1948, a master's degree in 1949, and a doctorate in 1958 -- all in civil engineering from the UI College of Engineering. From 1953-1958, he was a UI instructor in civil engineering and served as assistant professor from 1958-1961. He also taught at Macalester College, Michigan Technical University and the University of Akron. He retired from the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
