Posted December 22, 2004

IOWA CITY -- The Des Moines law firm of McKee, Voorhees & Sease has made a gift commitment of $100,000 to create a scholarship fund in the University of Iowa College of Law for students who plan to practice in the field of intellectual property.

The firm's gift establishing the McKee, Voorhees & Sease Law Scholarship Fund was made through the Iowa Law School Foundation.

McKee, Voorhees & Sease has an 80-year history of specializing in intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and intellectual property litigation. The firm employs several graduates of the Iowa Law School.

"Our firm is somewhat rare in Iowa, in that we focus solely on intellectual property law," said Heidi Nebel, managing partner of McKee, Voorhees & Sease, who received a B.S. degree from the UI in 1989. "We wanted to encourage bright young students to pursue this area of law and understand that they can choose to stay in Iowa to practice."

The law firm has created similar scholarships at Drake University and Creighton University. "As a University of Iowa graduate, I wanted to be sure we offered the same support to UI students," added Nebel.

Said Mark Janis, UI professor of law and H. Blair and Joan V. White Intellectual Property Law Scholar, "The McKee, Voorhees & Sease firm has been engaged in our educational mission for several years. This generous gift will be vital in helping attract outstanding intellectual property law students to Iowa."

Added Iowa Law School Dean Carolyn Jones, "We are grateful for the McKee gift, as it helps us in our goal to build a program of national distinction in an area of law that can have a substantial impact on innovation and business growth in the state of Iowa."

The McKee, Voorhees, & Sease gift is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
