UI Dance Marathon to benefit patients of Children's Hospital of Iowa
Posted February 3, 2004
IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa students will celebrate a very special occasion when they hold their 10th annual Dance Marathon Feb. 6-7 to help children receiving care for cancer at Children's Hospital of Iowa.
Organizers are expecting more than 1,000 dancers, volunteers and committee members to participate in the 10th anniversary event in the Iowa Memorial Union on the UI campus. The 2003 UI Dance Marathon raised more than $607,000.
The mission of UI Dance Marathon is to provide financial and emotional support through special projects to families served by Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics with an emphasis on pediatric oncology. UI Dance Marathon is the largest Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon organization in the United States and is the UI's largest student-run philanthropic event. UI Dance Marathon has raised more than $2.8 million since 1995.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 and concludes at 7 p.m. Feb. 7. Dance Marathons that also benefit Children's Miracle Network are held annually on the campuses of Iowa State University in Ames and Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. This year's ISU Dance Marathon Jan. 24 raised $100,129.89.
Children's Miracle Network is the nation's largest charitable organization. All of the funds raised in an area stay in that same area to benefit the local children's hospital. Donations are used to enhance the quality of patients' hospital stays, support research and purchase the sophisticated pediatric health care equipment necessary to care for critically ill and injured children.
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, Children's Miracle Network is an international non-profit organization dedicated to generating funds and awareness programs to benefit children treated at 170 children's hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. The network also includes 75 corporate sponsors, 200 television stations and more than 135 radio stations.
Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City is the state's longest-serving children's hospital. More than 100,000 children receive care at Children's Hospital of Iowa and its statewide network of outreach clinics each year.
