Public invited to Blank Honors Center open house, dedication July 2

Posted June 9, 2004

IOWA CITY -- On Friday, July 2, the public is invited to join in an open house for and dedication of the new University of Iowa Blank Honors Center.

The event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. The center is located on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, next to Daum Residence Hall. Refreshments will be served.

Des Moines resident Myron Blank, a major contributor toward the building project, will be the special guest of honor. UI President David Skorton will make remarks, as will Honors Program Director Alice B. Fulton and Nicholas Colangelo, director of the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development.

By bringing the Honors Center and Belin-Blank Center together under a single roof, the UI has become one of the first schools in the nation to offer in one place programs, services and support for academically gifted and talented students from kindergarten through college.

The center is named after Myron and the late Jacqueline Blank, who donated $5 million toward the $14 million project.

The Blanks' gift is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as preferred channels for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
