Hugh Downs to deliver program on successful aging April 5

IOWA CITY -- Renowned national newsman Hugh Downs will give a free public talk, "Older Then, Younger Now," at 8 p.m. Monday, April 5, at Hancher Auditorium. Downs, long-time anchor of ABC's primetime news magazine show "20/20," is one of the most familiar figures in the history of television. An award-winning media personality and the author of several books, Downs has enjoyed a distinguished 64-year career, during which he has broadcast from every continent and the North and South poles. All that, and he demonstrates no signs of slowing down. As an advocate for aging issues, he will address the audience on the positive contributions everyone can make toward their own successful aging and share some of the notable events of his life's journey. Downs has shared his interest and expertise on the subject of aging in several books, including "Potential," a psychological study of emotional maturing; and "Thirty Dirty Lies About Old," a book which debunks the myths of aging. Downs also wrote two manuals on planning for later years. He holds a certificate in geriatrics from Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and since 1982 has served as a member of the Board of Overseers at the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College in New York. Downs is the recipient of the 2004 Chair's Award from the American Society on Aging. This free event is made possible through an endowment to the UI College of Nursing by Woodrow Morris, Ph.D., professor emeritus of the UI Carver College of Medicine, and his wife, Mary Anders Morris; in addition to corporate gifts from Mercy Iowa City, KCRG-TV, Oaknoll Retirement Residence, and the Iowa City Press-Citizen. "As advances in technology and health care have resulted in people living longer, it's important that we focus not only on longevity, but on sustaining vibrant and satisfying lives into later years," said Melanie C. Dreher, Ph.D., Kelting Dean and professor of nursing. "I'm thrilled to have Hugh Downs in Iowa talking about the pursuit of a dynamic life at every age and instilling an appreciation for how we can help those in our communities age well. I'm grateful for the generous support of Dr. Morris and all of the community sponsors whose contributions make this event possible." Downs will also speak to UI students at an afternoon lecture about aging issues, including how aging is represented in the media. The free lecture will be held at 2 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. UI students and the public are encouraged to attend. The UI College of Nursing's gerontological nursing graduate program is ranked number two nationally by U. S. News & World Report. The College's strengths in geriatric education derive, in part, from its Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center and its John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, which both provide funding for a variety of research and education initiatives.
