Michael Harris to deliver annual Spriestersbach lecture

IOWA CITY -- Michael Harris, associate professor of African and African-American art history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present the annual Bette Spriestersbach Distinguished Lecture at the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25. A reception will follow the lecture in the newly renovated Nancy and Craig Willis Atrium. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public. Harris will speak on "African-American Artists and Double Consciousness." Focusing on the multiple identity issues that arise when an artist is a member of a variety of cultural and social groups, Harris will incorporate several of the underlying issues addressed by the UIMA's current exhibition, "American Tableaux: Selections from the Collection of Walker Art Center." Harris holds a doctorate in art history and is an artist, curator and author of "Colored Pictures: Race and Visual Representation." The annual Spriestersbach Lecture at the Museum of Art honors the late Bette R. Spriestersbach, a museum docent and a former program associate in the Child Health Specialty Clinics in the UI Hospital School who died last month. She was the wife of former UI vice president Duane C. Spriestersbach, who endowed the lecture in 1992 through a gift to the University of Iowa Foundation. "American Tableaux" is on display at the UIMA through April 25. The exhibition includes works by 55 20th-century American artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, David Hockney, Tom Wesselman and Kara Walker. Sixty-two paintings, sculptures, installations, prints and photographs are featured in the collection on loan from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. "American Tableaux" was organized by Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. It is made possible by generous support from the Dain Rauscher Foundation and Marshall Field's Project Imagine. The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
