Hearst Foundation adds $100,000 to UI nursing scholarship fund

Posted March 30, 2004

IOWA CITY -- The William Randolph Hearst Foundation of San Francisco has added a $100,000 gift to the scholarship fund it established in 1997 to benefit underrepresented students in the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

The endowed Hearst Foundation Nursing Scholarship Fund, created with an initial $100,000 gift to the UI Foundation in 1997 and an additional $100,000 gift in 1998, helps the UI nursing college encourage underrepresented nurses with associate degrees to complete their B.S.N. degrees at Iowa.

"We are committed to establishing greater diversity within the field of nursing," said Melanie C. Dreher, dean of the UI College of Nursing. "Thanks to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation's continued generosity and vision, the college can keep helping underrepresented nursing professionals advance in their careers and improve healthcare delivery."

The students selected as Hearst Scholars each year receive tuition scholarships and participate in leadership opportunities within the UI College of Nursing. Applications for the Hearst Foundation Nursing Scholarships are available through the college's Office of Student Services.

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation is one of two independent private philanthropies established by William Randolph Hearst to help advance education, health and human services and culture. The Hearst Foundation has made previous gifts to the UI, including support for the International Writing Program, scholarships and a visiting-scholars program in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the renovation of Iowa Hall in the Museum of Natural History.

The gift from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation is part of the UI's $850 million comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as a preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
