Halloran named new chair of UI Libraries development board

IOWA CITY -- Former state legislator Kathleen Halloran of Cedar Rapids will be the new chair of the UI Libraries Development Advisory Board of the Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries. "I'm pleased to step up to be the next chair of the UI Libraries Board," said Halloran, an advisory bord member since 1994. "When taken all together, the Libraries truly are the heart of the university. Nothing can happen without them. Our job is to make the resources and services at the Libraries available and easy to utilize." Halloran is a retired administrator in the division of professional licensing of the Iowa Department of Commerce. She served in the state legislature for 10 years where she chaired several important legislative committees including Fiscal, Rules and Administration, Judiciary, Ways and Means, Ethics, Education Appropriations and Tax Policy. She also served on the regional library board. Her civic and volunteer work includes board and advisory affiliations with Tanager Place Foundation, the Catherine McAuley Center for Women, the Iowa Women's Athletics Development Board of Directors and Waypoint. "Kay has been a long-time supporter of the UI Libraries," said Nancy Baker, UI librarian. "Her connections around the state and her enthusiasm will help us continue our services to students, faculty and to all Iowans." Halloran replaces Jeff Disterhoft, who had served two consecutive terms as chair. The Development Advisory Board grew from the Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, an association of individuals committed to the enrichment and growth of the University Libraries. Established in 1964, it is one of the oldest such organizations affiliated with a university library. The Friends are individuals who, through their annual contributions and valuable membership activities, demonstrate their conviction that a strong and active library is essential, reflecting the strength of the university as a whole. Support of the University Libraries recognizes that the influence of a great research library reaches beyond the university to the many other communities of which it is a part -- the larger academic and library community, the world of business and health care and to all institutions and individuals who are the beneficiaries of its resources, particularly the citizens of Iowa.
