Gift helps UI pediatric brain tumor research

Posted November 22, 2004

IOWA CITY -- A gift of $57,000 from the State of Iowa Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will help University of Iowa researchers develop new therapies for children with brain tumors.

The $57,000 award was made through the UI Foundation to the UI Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Anne Robinson, grand matron, and Ray Reardon, grand patron of the State of Iowa Chapter, selected pediatric brain tumors as the organization's fundraising project this past year. A total of 135 local chapters took part in the effort.

The gift will support research led by pediatric cancer expert Sue O'Dorisio, M.D., Ph.D., the University of Iowa Foundation Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

O'Dorisio, who treats children through Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics, also is a member of the executive committee of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI.
