Hawkeye scholarship recipients, donors honored

IOWA CITY --The University of Iowa Hawkeyes are renowned nationwide, not just for the steady success of UI student-athletes and coaches in competition, but also for the loyalty of Iowa fans.

That legendary allegiance to the black and gold is apparent in the extraordinary generosity of Hawkeye supporters who have joined together to establish endowed scholarship support for the student-athletes who give their all in competition and in the classrooms.

Such support is crucial -- endowed scholarship gifts through the Hawkeye Visions Endowment Program have enabled Iowa's intercollegiate athletics programs to move forward even in the face of rapidly increasing scholarship costs.

More than 130 scholarship contributors or their representatives were honored at the ninth annual Named Scholarship Awards Dinner, held at the Levitt Center for University Advancement on Friday, December 2, 2005.

Also on hand to meet and thank their benefactors were more than 150 student-athletes who received named scholarships in the 2005-06 academic year. Both groups were introduced at halftime of the men's basketball game against Fairfield that evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The University of Iowa Foundation, through which the scholarships are created, and the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics join Hawkeye fans everywhere in congratulating the following scholarship recipients and thanking the following donors for their leadership in supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Hawkeye Visions Endowment Program
The following is a list of Hawkeye student-athletes who received named scholarships during the 2005-06 academic year. Scholarships being developed and/or planned will be listed when they are awarded in future years.

VISIONARY LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS
A Visionary Level scholarship requires an endowment of $250,000 or more and provides a named scholarship for a specific team position.

LEADERSHIP LEVEL SCHOLARSHIPS
A Leadership Level scholarship requires an endowment of at least $125,000 and provides a named scholarship for a specific sport.

SUSTAINING TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS
A Sustaining Tuition scholarship requires an endowment of at least $30,000 and provides general scholarship support.

The ninth annual Athletic Named Scholarship Celebration brought together the scholarship recipients and donors at a reception and dinner at the Levitt Center for University Advancement. The event is hosted annually by The University of Iowa Foundation and The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Hawkeye football linebacker Abdul Hodge was a featured speaker at the scholarship celebration. Hodge received the Hayden Fry Captain's Scholarship.

Donor representative Carol Haupert established a scholarship in 2004. As the benefactor of the Carol Haupert Athletic Scholarship, she relayed her passion for the Iowa Hawkeyes as part of the evening program.

Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby addressed the student-athletes and scholarship representatives at the dinner program.

Following the dinner, the 2005-2006 scholarship recipients and donors were recognized during the halftime program of the men's basketball game on December 2, 2005.
