IOWA CITY -- A $5 million gift commitment to the UI Foundation from University of Iowa business graduate Henry B. Tippie of Austin, Texas, will endow the deanship at the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business.

Tippie, for whom the UI business college was named in recognition of his $30 million commitment to the college in 1999, has long been a generous UI supporter and volunteer. He said he hopes his latest gift will help the UI attract an exceptionally well-qualified candidate to succeed Gary C. Fethke, who will retire from the Tippie College of Business deanship in mid-2006 and return to the business faculty as the Leonard A. Hadley Professor in Leadership.

"In his 12 years as dean, Gary Fethke has strengthened all aspects of the college's academic and research programs, and the Tippie College of Business now enjoys a position of national prominence," Tippie said. "This endowment will help ensure that the next dean continues this upward trajectory, placing and keeping Iowa in the ranks of the nation's and the world's very best business schools."

UI President David Skorton said, "This remarkable gift, which is among the commitments that helped push the UI's Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign past its billion-dollar goal, continues Henry's truly visionary support for our mission.

"Henry understands the concept of transformational philanthropy; that is, generosity designed to help already excellent institutions take huge strides forward into greatness," Skorton continued. "Thanks to Dean Fethke's leadership, the Tippie College of Business is on the threshold of greatness today, and Henry's extraordinary gift will help assure that the next generation of leadership continues this ascent."

Originally from Belle Plaine, Iowa, Tippie earned a BSC degree in accounting from the UI in 1949. He is currently chairman of the board and chairman of the executive committee for Rollins Truck Leasing Corporation. In addition, he is chairman and CEO of Tippie Services, Inc., and chairman of Dover Downs Entertainment, Inc., and director of Matlack Systems, Inc., RPC, Inc., Safety-Kleen Corporation, and Rollins, Inc. He is the owner of Tippie Ranch, a 30,000-acre working cattle ranch near Austin.

In addition to his deanship and college-naming gifts, Tippie has endowed two scholarship funds, a faculty chair, research professorships and other programs in the Tippie College of Business. He was a founding member of the College of Business Board of Visitors, is a member of the UI Foundation Board of Directors and serves on its Investment Committee, and is a member of the National Campaign Steering Committee for the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign.

Tippie received the Outstanding Accounting Alumnus Award from the UI in 1989, and the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service from the UI Alumni Association in 1981. Nationally, he was awarded the Horatio Alger Award in 1996. Henry and his wife, Patricia, are members of the UI Presidents Club, the 1847 Society, the Tippie College of Business Dean's Club and the UI Alumni Association's Honors Circle.

The Tippie gift is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
