Gift from UI alumnus creates graduate fellowship

IOWA CITY -- A $110,000 bequest to the University of Iowa Foundation from the estate of UI graduate Kenneth T. Key will establish an endowed fellowship in the UI Graduate College. Key received an M.S. degree from the university in mechanics and hydraulics in 1965 and an M.S. degree in mathematics in 1967. The gift, made to the UI Foundation when Key died in 2004, will establish the Kenneth T. Key Graduate Fellowship, which will be awarded to top Taiwan-born graduate scholars, in accord with Key's wishes. The funds will support tuition costs for one scholar each year, beginning in the fall of 2005. "We are so grateful for this generous gift. Every fellowship the college can offer creates an opportunity for a deserving student who might not otherwise be able to attend the UI," said John Keller, dean of the University of Iowa Graduate College. "Further, the college recognizes the benefits of attracting scholars from diverse backgrounds. By offering access to graduate education for these talented individuals, the Graduate College fosters a broad learning environment and creates a center for converging perspectives that mirrors the world around us." The college will form a selection committee of deans and distinguished graduate faculty from a variety of disciplines to ensure that the fellowship is awarded to top candidates from diverse areas of graduate study. Once selected, the fellowship recipient will be introduced to the community of Taiwanese and other international scholars at Iowa, further strengthening cultural ties and support. Added Keller, "Donations such as these advance the Graduate College mission to create an academic and intellectual climate that respects diversity, values creativity, and supports development of the professional potential of each student.'" In an additional bequest, the Key gift will also establish a university-wide undergraduate tuition scholarship to be awarded annually. The Key gift is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
