UI scholarships awarded to incoming freshmen

IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa has awarded 120 scholarships to incoming UI freshmen -- 50 Presidential Scholarships and 70 Dean's Scholarships -- for the 2005-2006 academic year. A Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious honor given to entering freshmen. Recipients were chosen from a field of over 500 top-ranking high school seniors from all over the country. Presidential Scholarships are awarded on the basis of high school class rank, grade-point average, college entrance exam scores, performance on the essay portion of the application, and high school or community service and leadership. The award is $7,000 per year or $28,000 over four years. Dean's Scholarships are given to selected top-ranking finalists in the Presidential Scholarship competition. Recipients were chosen from a field of over 500 top-ranking high school seniors from all over the country. Dean's Scholarships are awarded on the basis of high school class rank, grade-point average, college entrance exam scores, performance on the essay portion of the application, and high school or community service and leadership. The award is $1,000 per year or $4,000 over four years. Creating 100 new Presidential Scholarships, each of which requires a minimum endowment of $150,000, is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
