UI Foundation announces leadership changes

IOWA CITY -- University of Iowa Foundation President Michael J. New has stepped down from his position because of health reasons, the foundation's board chair announced today. New will remain as a member of the foundation staff, serving as chief development officer. Charles M. Kierscht, chair of the UI Foundation board of directors, will serve as interim president while a nationwide search is conducted and a new foundation president is hired. Kierscht also announced that three vice presidents in the foundation's fund-raising areas -- Flynn Andrizzi, David Triplett and Rich Wretman -- have been named to the organization's management group, joining New; Kierscht; Tiffani Shaw, senior vice president, CFO and treasurer; and Susan Shullaw, senior vice president, communications and campaign support. New, of Iowa City, earned a B.A. degree in journalism (1964) and an M.A. degree in sociology (1967), both from the UI. He has been a UI Foundation staff member for nearly 30 years. New joined the foundation in 1976 as a development officer representing the UI health colleges, was named vice president for development programs in 1985 and succeeded Darrell Wyrick as president upon Wyrick's retirement in 1998. Chief among New's accomplishments as foundation president has been his leadership of the UI's Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign (1999-2005), which will conclude at the end of this year. To date, the campaign has generated more than $960 million in gift commitments toward its $1 billion goal.
Kierscht, of Hinsdale, Ill., earned his B.A. degree from the UI in 1960 and his J.D. degree from the UI College of Law in 1962. Following graduation from law school, Kierscht served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1966 and then began a 29-year career with Kemper Financial Services in Chicago, retiring in 1995 as chairman, CEO and president. A longtime UI contributor and volunteer, Kierscht joined the UI Foundation board of directors in 1987 and was elected chair in 2003. He led the Iowa Law School's recent successful $33 million endowment campaign. Flynn Andrizzi is the foundation's vice president for medical center development, which includes fund raising for the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics and the UI College of Public Health. David Triplett is vice president for gift planning. Rich Wretman is vice president for constituent development programs. Kierscht, in his capacity as foundation board chair, will lead the search committee to name a new UI Foundation president. Committee members will include representatives of the foundation board as well as the university. UI President David Skorton will serve as an ex officio member.
