Alumna establishes two scholarships for CLAS students from Iowa

Posted September 14, 2005

IOWA CITY -- LuVella C. Burnett of Primghar, Iowa, has committed $335,000 to create the Elmer J. Steuck Memorial Scholarship and the LuVella C. Burnett Scholarship at The University of Iowa. Both scholarships, established through the UI Foundation, are for students from Iowa enrolled in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) who need financial assistance to attend the university.

The Steuck Scholarship is named in memory of Burnett's brother, who farmed near Primghar until his death in 2004.

Burnett earned a B.S.C. degree in business education from the UI in 1947 and a master's degree in business education from the UI in 1952. In addition to teaching at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan., she taught high school in Spencer, Iowa; Iowa City; Bettendorf, Iowa; and St. Joseph, Mo. Burnett retired in 1983 and has lived in her native town of Primghar since that time.

CLAS Dean Linda Maxson expressed her gratitude for the gifts.

"Mrs. Burnett has chosen to establish a legacy for her brother and herself that will benefit students in our college for generations," Maxson said. "We couldn't be more delighted, and we look forward to seeing many students gain an excellent UI liberal arts and sciences education thanks to Mrs. Burnett's generosity."

The Burnett gifts are part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
