IOWA CITY -- George Bergus, M.D., professor of family medicine and psychiatry in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named the Dr. William and Sondra Myers Family Professor, an appointment that lasts three years.
The Myers Family Professorship was established by gifts from the family to the UI Foundation to honor outstanding teachers of clinical medicine in the UI Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Myers earned a medical degree from the college.
In addition to teaching medical students, Bergus directs the Performance Based Assessment Program for the UI Carver College of Medicine. He also co-directs the family medicine/psychiatry residency program for UI Hospitals and Clinics. He recently was included in U.S. News and World Report's 2006 "Best Doctors in America." Bergus has been a UI faculty member since 1990.
"Dr. Bergus is passionate about education. His teaching abilities impart the best skills to students and inspires them always to do their best," said Paul James, M.D., head and professor of family medicine. "We're fortunate that the Myers family professorship will appropriately honor and foster Dr. Bergus' contributions to medical education."
Bergus earned a medical degree in 1982 from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed a residency in family medicine at Highland Hospital/University of Rochester in New York. He completed a master's degree in education at the UI in 2002. His research interests include medical education and psychiatry in primary care settings.
