Gordon named Sahai Family Professor of Medical Education

Posted August 25, 2006

IOWA CITY -- Joel Gordon, M.D., professor of internal medicine in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been named the Sahai Family Professor of Medical Education, a renewable appointment that lasts three years.

The Sahai Family, through gifts they made to the UI Foundation, established the professorship to support a faculty member whose core teaching responsibilities relate to primary care specialties.

Gordon, a UI faculty member since 1985, is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. He is director of the third- and fourth-year clinical curriculum for the UI Carver College of Medicine and has been significantly involved in the medical student curriculum for more than a decade. Gordon develops innovative computer simulations to improve clinical instruction and assessment. He also has been faculty director of the Lois Boulware Medical Student Learning Community since 2001.

"The Sahai Professorship is a well-deserved appointment for Dr. Gordon. He has provided both leadership in curriculum development and hands-on implementation of new teaching methods," said Paul Rothman, M.D., UI head of internal medicine and the Francois M. Abboud Chair in Internal Medicine. "We're fortunate that his many accomplishments benefit our students."

Gordon earned a medical degree in 1976 from the University of Colorado, where he also completed a residency and fellowship in 1982 at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the foundation, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
