UI alumnus, spouse leave estate gift to College of Law for scholarship

IOWA CITY -- The estate of Benjamin C. "Ben" and Ruth I. Buckingham of Des Moines has enhanced a scholarship in the University of Iowa College of Law through a charitable bequest of almost $415,000. The permanently endowed Ben C. and Ruth I. Buckingham Scholarship, created in 1998 through the couple's gift to the Iowa Law School Foundation, is awarded to UI law students who demonstrate financial need, with preference given to Iowa residents. College of Law Dean Carolyn Jones said the Buckingham Scholarship will be a fitting memorial to the couple, who contributed to the UI for 45 consecutive years, supporting various areas of the university in addition to the law school. "Ben and Ruth were generous supporters of Ben's alma mater for many years, and we are honored to be able to enhance the Buckingham Scholarship as a result of this estate gift," Jones said. "The Buckinghams always set an excellent example for our students, and now their legacy will live on in our college in perpetuity." Ruth Buckingham died in January 2006, at the age of 96. Ben Buckingham, who died in 2000, earned two degrees from the UI, a B.A. degree in commerce and science in 1936 and a law degree in 1938. He was a retired general counsel with Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and several other insurance companies. The World War II veteran was a member of the Presidents Club, which recognizes the university's most generous contributors, as well as of the UI Alumni Association and UI Law Dean's Club among other professional and fraternal associations. The Iowa Law School Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit the UI College of Law; the UI Foundation is acknowledged by the UI as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all other areas of the university.
