Sale, Janis named to UI law endowed chairs

IOWA CITY -- Hillary Sale and Mark Janis now share more than an office wall in the University of Iowa's Boyd Law Building. Both are now also the holders of the newest endowed chairs at the UI College of Law. Janis has been named to the H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Intellectual Property Law, while Sale has been named to the F. Arnold Daum Chair in Corporate Finance and Law. The two of them also have adjoining offices in the law building. Janis and Sale said they were both excited to be the first scholars appointed to the newly endowed chairs. "Blair and Joan White are not only great friends of the law school, they are great people, and I'm honored to hold a chair named for them," said Janis, who joined the UI law faculty in 1995. He is an expert in patent and trademark law, and is well known for his work on intellectual property rights in agricultural biotechnology. He earned his B.S. from Purdue University and his law degree from Indiana University. "Over the years, I've met many attorneys who worked with F. Arnold Daum and everyone spoke highly of his skill, intelligence and integrity," said Sale. "It's an honor to be associated with him." Sale joined the UI faculty in 1997 and is a top corporate governance and securities law expert. Two of her articles, "Delaware's Good Faith," published in 2004, and "Securities Fraud as Corporate Governance: Reflections Upon Federalism," published in 2003, were selected by the Corporate Practice Commentator as among the top 10 corporate and securities law articles published in those years. Sale also teaches in the Executive MBA Program in the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business. She earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boston University and her law degree from Harvard. "Hillary and Mark have done exemplary scholarly work, teaching and service to the law school," said Carolyn Jones, dean of the College of Law. "They are more than deserving of these new positions and we look forward to their continued outstanding work." The White Chair was endowed by Blair and Joan White of Wilmette, Ill. Blair received his B.A. and law degrees from the University of Iowa and became managing partner at the Chicago law firm of Sidley and Austin. Joan also earned her B.A. from the University of Iowa. The two met as undergraduates at UI and married later, after re-connecting in Chicago. The Daum Chair was endowed by the Daum family in memory of F. Arnold Daum, a native of Buffalo Center who received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Iowa. He worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of the Treasury from 1937 to 1943, then earned a reputation as one of the country's top corporate and securities law experts as a partner at a New York City law firm of Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Daum died in 1983. The gifts endowing the White and Daum Chairs were made through the Iowa Law School Foundation and the University of Iowa Foundation, which are acknowledged by the university as the preferred channels for private contributions to the UI College of Law.
