WSUI/KSUI celebrate community during spring on-air fund drive

Posted March 23, 2006

IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa's public radio stations, WSUI-AM 910 and KSUI-FM 91.7, part of the Iowa Public Radio network, will hold their annual spring on-air fund drive March 31 through April 7.

The weeklong fundraising effort is a time for listeners to call in and pledge their support to the stations. Listeners of public radio can pledge during the drive by calling 1-800-AIR-IOWA or 1-800-247-4692 or pledge on-line anytime at wsui.uiowa.edu or ksui.uiowa.edu.

"This is an exciting year for the stations as we celebrate community," says Joan Kjaer, WSUI/KSUI's interim director of broadcasting. "The 'Live from Prairie Lights' 15-year Anniversary show is just around the corner and we have the nationally syndicated program 'Whad'Ya Know?' with Michael Feldman coming to Hancher in June. We also continue to share our locally produced series like 'Talk of Iowa' and 'Know the Score' which bring the community together in wonderful ways. These programs, along with our nationally syndicated offerings, are provided in great part by listener contributions."

The fund drive hopes to generate a pool of new donors. "We hope to continue to build our donor base as people come and go in this community," Kjaer said.

Nancy Hagen, interim director of marketing, says, "I think a lot of people out there listening to our service underestimate the difference they can make. This is public radio and it takes everyone doing just a little to keep this service strong."

The drive will offer a number of opportunities to give as well as receive. Barilla America, Inc., the U.S.-based division of the Barilla Group, makes their pasta in Ames, Iowa and will donate a pasta product to the Food Bank of Iowa or HACAP (Hawkeye Area Community Action Program) for donations made by credit card.

There will also be opportunities throughout the drive to enter a drawing for a "Whad'Ya Know" package including a pair of tickets to the show June 3, reservations at an Iowa City hotel and lunch with Michael Feldman following the show. WSUI/KSUI will also be giving away a pair of tickets to see David Sedaris April 22 at Hoyt Sherman Auditorium in Des Moines. Sedaris is a best-selling author and humorist who is often featured on National Public Radio.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
