UI Foundation announces staff additions, changes

IOWA CITY -- The University of Iowa Foundation has added three new fund raisers for the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics, along with a new associate director of development for the UI College of Law and the Iowa Law School Foundation. The UI Foundation also hired a new associate director of gift planning and announced promotions and position changes for three current staff members.

New additions include:

Andrea Birt

• Andrea Birt, assistant director of development for the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics. Birt is a graduate of the UI with a B.A. degree in journalism and mass communications, and has completed graduate work at the UI in persuasive communication. She currently serves on the board of the Ralph Schultz Family Foundation of Waterloo, and most recently worked as an account executive with KGAN-TV in Cedar Rapids. Prior to KGAN, Birt worked as a consultant and strategist in the media and communications fields.
  
  In her new position, Birt will be working on behalf of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the UI Center for Macular Degeneration.

Tori Erickson

• Tori Erickson, associate director of development, major gifts, for the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics. A native of Wisconsin, Erickson has degrees in education from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (B.S.E. and M.S.E.) and a Ph.D. in educational administration from UW-Madison. She has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, beginning as an admissions counselor and director of enrollment management at UW-Platteville and later as director of admissions for Carthage College and UW-Whitewater. Most recently, she worked at the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business as an assistant director for the Professionals and Managers program, helping to coordinate evening MBA programs in Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities.
  
  Erickson will act as liaison among a number of departments in the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics to coordinate their fund-raising efforts. In addition, she will represent the college and hospitals to secure major gifts in key geographic areas around the country.

Susan Hartwell

• Susan Hartwell, associate director of development, major gifts, for the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics. Hartwell graduated from the UI in 1974 with a B.S. degree in medical technology and general science, and has since worked primarily in the medical field, most recently as an equipment consultant for a leading manufacturer of diagnostic biomedical equipment.
  
  Hartwell will work with multiple departments within the UI Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics in her fund-raising efforts, focusing her donor-cultivation efforts in specific geographic areas.

Derek Pendergast

• Derek Pendergast, associate director of gift planning. Pendergast received a B.A. degree with a coaching endorsement from Luther College in 1995, and a graduate endorsement in education from the University of Northern Iowa in 2000. He will complete graduate work in the MBA program at the UI in December 2006. Pendergast is an experienced financial professional, most recently working for World Trend Financial Planning Services in Iowa City. In addition, he has been involved with raising funds for nonprofit organizations in the Cedar Rapids area.
  
  In his new position, Pendergast will serve as a field officer to actively seek major planned gift support (both outright and deferred) for the UI and its programs, developing and implementing strategies for prospects in assigned geographic areas.

Rod Schultz

• Rod Schultz, associate director of development for the Iowa Law School Foundation and the UI College of Law. Schultz earned a B.A. degree in finance with a minor in economics from the UI in 1994, and comes to the foundation with 14 years of experience in the banking field. He also has experience in major gift fund raising for higher education, having worked for two years as assistant director of development at Grinnell College.
  
  In his new position, Schultz will focus on major gift development in Iowa, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, the Kansas City area and other regions yet to be determined.

Promotions and position changes within UI Foundation executive staff include:

Jackie Aanes

• Jackie Aanes, to assistant director for annual giving programs, from telefund supervisor. Aanes will oversee improved integration of the telefund with annual giving direct-mail efforts, and will direct the foundation's first-ever marketing initiative to target young alumni (UI graduates from the last 1-10 years) who have not yet made gifts to the UI.




Nic Arp

• Nic Arp, to director, editorial services, from senior writer/editor. Arp has been writing and editing for the foundation for more than six years, and will now oversee and direct the work of the editorial team, which includes three other writer/editors. In his new position, he will be part of the leadership team of the communications department.




Tami Baumann

• Tami Baumann, to director of development for the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business, from director, gift planning. Already a seasoned development officer for the foundation, Baumann will now focus her efforts on cultivating support for the UI Tippie College of Business. In her new role, she will provide key support to initiatives of the college, including, but not limited to, the Emmett J. Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance.
