Scenes from the Good. Better. Best. Iowa Campaign Victory Celebration

Posted May 10, 2006

IOWA CITY -- Volunteers, high-level contributors, UI administrators, and UI Foundation staff gathered at Hancher Auditorium on Saturday, May 6, to celebrate the successful conclusion of the University's historic Good. Better. Best. Iowa campaign, which raised nearly $1.06 billion in support of the UI's outstanding people and programs.

Here are a few highlights of the gala evening, which was attended by approximately 500 invited guests:

As the Hancher doors opened, contributors, volunteers, and staff waited in the registration line. Provost Michael Hogan (far right) and other UI officials were on hand to greet guests.

Once inside the Hancher lobby, guests were treated to four specially-themed hors d'oeuvre tables, each graced with a campaign emblem sculpted in ice.

Throughout the pre-program reception, guests wondered, "What's going on behind that black curtain?"

Once inside the auditorium for the program, guests heard first from UI President David Skorton . . .

. . . and finally by Paris Ivory, a scholarship recipient and UI business major from Bolingbrook, Illinois.

At the end of the program, guests exited the auditorium and discovered the evening's star attraction: A 3-ton, 10-foot-high ice sculpture of Old Capitol, the UI's historic centerpiece, which had been rededicated and opened to the public earlier in the day.

Guests also found the hors d'oeuvre tables transformed into luscious dessert buffets; large campaign banners and members of the pep band helped set the festive mood.

When the night was over, workers dismantled the Old Capitol ice sculpture in much the same way it had been assembled (behind that mysterious black curtain) earlier in the event -- block by frozen block!
