IOWA CITY -- Robert E. Youle of Evergreen, Colo., a 1976 UI College of Law alumnus, has committed $1.5 million to establish the Robert E. Youle Chair in Antitrust and Trade Regulation. The endowed chair will enable the UI law school to recruit and retain top scholars in that area of law in perpetuity.

Carolyn Jones, dean of the UI College of Law, praised Youle's generosity, saying it reflected his loyalty to his alma mater.

"Mr. Youle has long been a generous friend to our college," Jones said of Youle, who has made contributions to the UI law school for 23 consecutive years. "He has established himself as a leading attorney in his field, and has always credited his law education here at Iowa for giving him a solid foundation for his successful career. We couldn't be more grateful for Rob's extraordinary commitment to the future of our law school."

A member in the Litigation Department of Sherman & Howard L.L.C., in Denver, Colo., Youle has practiced complex commercial litigation since 1976, and joined Sherman & Howard in 1978. In 1991, he co-founded Williams, Youle & Koenigs, P.C., a commercial litigation firm in Denver. He rejoined Sherman & Howard in February 2002. He is a frequent lecturer on antitrust and commercial litigation issues and has served as adjunct professor of antitrust law at the University of Denver College of Law.

Youle is listed in "The Best Lawyers in America" in the areas of both antitrust law and commercial litigation, and was named one of Denver's best commercial litigation lawyers in "5280 Magazine, 2003."

He cited his desire to see future UI law students benefit from excellent teaching and scholarship as the motivation behind his gift commitment, which was made as a charitable bequest as part of his estate planning.

"For me, what made my Iowa legal education so valuable was the quality of the faculty," Youle said. "I want to see the college's legacy of excellence continue, and I made this gift to help ensure that it will."

The Youle gift was part of the UI's comprehensive campaign, which concluded at the end of 2005 and was conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation and the Iowa Law School Foundation. Named Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University, the seven-year effort raised more than $1 billion in private gifts to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
