IOWA CITY -- Interim University of Iowa President Gary Fethke today announced that Susan M. Shullaw, currently a senior vice president at the University of Iowa Foundation, will begin a temporary assignment as senior associate to the UI president for strategic communication, effective November 13, 2006.

Working with director of University Relations Steve Parrott and his staff, Shullaw will be charged with assessing the current activities of the Office of University Relations and making recommendations to the UI president regarding possible changes to the unit's operations and organizational structure, based on best practices at peer institutions and on the UI's current and anticipated needs. Her appointment is anticipated to last between five and eight months.

"The University Relations team has done an excellent job in recent months, particularly in launching and promoting our new 'Be Remarkable' marketing campaign," Fethke said. "I'd like to see us do even more to proactively engage the university's external audiences, and I believe Susan's expertise in this area will be helpful as we examine new ways to share the UI's strengths with our key stakeholders, both on and off campus."

Shullaw, who earned a B.A. in English from the UI in 1973, is a 19-year UI Foundation staff member, and most recently oversaw communication efforts for the university's billion-dollar "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign. She has been a frequent presenter on strategic communications and marketing issues, and she chaired the national campaign communications conferences for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in 2003 and 2004.

"We are honored that President Fethke looked to the UI Foundation for this type of communications expertise," said UI Foundation President Lynette Marshall. "Although we'll miss Susan's day-to-day involvement in the management of the organization, we believe her knowledge and experience will be very useful in helping the university expand its marketing communications. These efforts benefit all of us involved in university advancement, from fund raising and alumni relations to admissions and community service."

During her UI appointment, Shullaw will serve as a member of the UI Vice Presidents Group. She will assume day-to-day supervision of OUR staff and will have her primary office with the University Relations team at Plaza Centre One.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the foundation, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
