Cubs' Wood's bowling fundraiser, auction to benefit Project 3000

IOWA CITY -- What would you do with an "official" autographed urinal straight from the Chicago Cubs clubhouse at Wrigley Field? Perhaps the most unique "must-have" for the Cubs fan in your family, the porcelain fixture is one of many items to be auctioned during the fourth annual Kerry Wood Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament set for Sunday, July 22, at the 10pin Bowling Lounge, located at 330 N. State St. in Chicago. Proceeds from the event will benefit Project 3000, a partnership between the University of Iowa, Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee and his 1st Touch Foundation, and Boston Celtic CEO/co-owner Wyc Grousbeck to find a cure for the genetic eye disease Leber's Congenital Amaurosis. Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA) is an inherited cause of blindness in children. Grousbeck and Lee each have a child with LCA. Project 3000 refers to the number of people in the United States with LCA. More than 600 Americans with LCA already are known, leaving approximately 2,400 people in the nation who have the disease unidentified. Affected individuals will be offered genetic testing at the UI's John and Marcia Carver Nonprofit Genetic Testing Laboratory. Through the testing service, UI experts will give people with LCA more accurate information about their disease. The eventual goal is to find a cure. Wood's tournament July 22 will feature many of his Cubs teammates, as well as retired players and Chicago media celebrities who will join forces with 24 corporate-sponsored teams for an evening of bowling. The tournament will host a "draw party" on Saturday evening, July 21, at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse, where sponsors will have the chance to bid on their celebrity team captain. Besides bowling, the July 22 festivities include celebrity bartending and the silent auction. Besides the Cubs urinal, other auction items include dinner for four at Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse with Cubs manager Lou Piniella; bat boy/bat girl for a day; a ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field; and jerseys, signed photos and other memorabilia from throughout Major League Baseball. Bidding for the online auction will close at midnight July 21 and carry over to the silent auction July 22, where online bidders' maximum bids will be used as proxy bids.
