IOWA CITY -- Iowa business and civic leader Marvin A. Pomerantz of Des Moines has made a $4 million gift commitment to the University of Iowa Foundation that will create two endowed chairs at the UI, one of which will be named in honor of John W. Colloton, former director of UI Hospitals and Clinics.

One-half of the gift, $2 million, will establish the John W. Colloton Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine in the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. This chair will help the cardiology division in the Department of Internal Medicine to advance its efforts in pursuing leading-edge research and developing promising new treatments for cardiovascular disease.

Of the remaining commitment, $1.5 million will establish the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in the College of Public Health. In addition, $500,000 has been designated to go toward the construction of a new facility to house the UI College of Public Health.

"It is a privilege for me to honor the legacy of my good friend John Colloton in this way," said Pomerantz, a 1952 UI business graduate and longtime UI supporter and volunteer. "But as much as this is a tribute to a true Iowa hero, this endowed chair will help the UI continue its international leadership in cardiovascular medicine and offer hope to countless heart patients and their families.

"Also near and dear to me and my family," Pomerantz continued, "is the groundbreaking work being done in the university's College of Public Health. The faculty and staff there not only help us understand significant trends in disease and health, but they also promote the crucial role of prevention in health care. I'm very proud to support their work."

UI Vice President for Medical Affairs Jean Robillard said, "This remarkable gift demonstrates once again the forward thinking of one of Iowa's great philanthropic treasures. Marvin Pomerantz has provided inspirational leadership for many years. This is only the most recent example of his commitment to Iowa and to the University of Iowa."

Marvin Pomerantz is a member of the UI Foundation Board of Directors and of the Tippie College of Business Board of Visitors. He was co-chair of the National Campaign Steering Committee for the UI's $1 billion "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign, and he is a past president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

"The establishment of the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in Public Health will provide support for a senior faculty member whose academic leadership contributes to improved quality of life," said Dean James Merchant of the College of Public Health. "Together with the other UI facilities and programs that bear their family name, the Pomerantz Chair in Public Health will stand as a permanent tribute to the generosity and vision of these remarkable Iowans."

Pomerantz and his family have previously provided support for two endowed faculty chairs in the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business, and for the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at UI Hospitals and Clinics. In 2001, Pomerantz and his wife, Rose Lee, made a $10 million naming gift for the Pomerantz Center, which houses the UI's Admission Visitors Center, the Academic Advising Center, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network and the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program. Pomerantz also has made significant contributions for other UI areas, including the Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, Hancher Auditorium, athletics and the UI Museum of Art.

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the foundation, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
