IOWA CITY -- Cassandra Foens, M.D., of Waterloo, Iowa, has made a $150,000 gift commitment to the University of Iowa Foundation to create an endowed fund that will annually support a major public lecture at the university.

According to Phillip E. Jones, UI vice president for student services and dean of students, the first Cassandra S. Foens, M.D., Lecture will be held during Welcome Week in the fall of 2008. Welcome Week, which is scheduled during the first week of fall semester classes, offers a series of events designed to orient new and returning UI students to campus and motivate them to strive for academic excellence and social engagement.

"This is the first major outright gift ever given for the UI Lecture Committee and also our first named, endowed fund, and it will have a transformational effect on the quality of speakers we're able to bring to the UI," Jones said.

"The UI Lecture Series sponsors some of the most timely, thought-provoking and best-attended events on the UI campus," he continued. "Cassie Foens understands the importance of bringing speakers of national and international renown to Iowa City, where they can interact with our students and keep the entire community engaged with the most important issues of our day. We're enormously grateful for her support."

A native of Waterloo, Foens received a B.S. degree from the UI in 1983, earned her M.D. at Iowa in 1987, and completed a residency in radiation oncology at the UI in 1992. A Fellow of the American College of Radiology, Foens is a radiation oncologist with Clinical Radiologists, P.C., of Waterloo, and is an active UI volunteer and contributor. She is a member of the UI Foundation board of directors, the UI Alumni Association and the UI Presidents Club. In addition to her support for the UI Lecture Series, in 2000 she established the Cassandra S. Foens, M.D., Presidential Scholarship, and is a generous supporter of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

"The University of Iowa provided me with an exceptional education for a successful career and a rewarding life," Foens said. "A university education includes vital experiences both inside and outside the classroom. I felt fortunate that I could take advantage of all the fantastic speakers who came to campus and challenged students to think in new ways, and get involved with the important issues of our time. I hope my gift will help ensure that future generations of UI students can enjoy those same opportunities."

The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the UI Foundation, visit its web site at www.uiowafoundation.org.
