The University of Iowa College of Nursing
The College of Nursing is an integral part of the University of Iowa Health Sciences Center, sharing in and contributing to teaching, research, and patient care resources that have earned international recognition. According to U.S. News and World Report (March 2007), the College of Nursing is:
- No. 1 in the nation for its Nursing Service Administration program
- No. 1 for its gerontological/geriatric nursing graduate program
- No. 6 for its nurse anesthetist degree
- No. 9 for the college's master's degree
- No. 11 for family nurse practicioner
The college's doctoral program is the first and only doctoral program in nursing in Iowa and one of only 53 in the nation.
The UI's health center provides an exceptionally strong setting for nursing preparation because the educational and clinical resources that are needed to educate nurses are available on or near the campus. Faculty and students participate fully in University life and contribute their time, interest, and abilities to the many general and special activities of a major research university.
The college is committed to designing and implementing curricula in which students develop critical thinking abilities, clinical decision-making skills, and professional nursing values in an increasingly complex health care system. Its baccalaureate and master's programs are approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing, and graduates of the baccalaureate program qualify to take the licensure examination required for practice as registered nurses.
