Through her generous contributions to the UI College of Nursing, Sally Mathis Hartwig has left an indelible mark on not just the college, but on the entire nursing community.
A native of Dayton, Iowa, Sally earned a B.S.N. degree from the UI in 1975 and a master's degree in Nursing Administration in 1977. Her long association with UI Hospitals and Clinics and the college has continued ever since.
Sally served as director of nursing at UI Hospitals and Clinics from 1979 to 1993 and again, on an interim basis, in 1998.
In 1999, her colleagues and associates established the Sally Mathis Hartwig Professorship in Gerontological Nursing Research as a way to recognize her important contributions and to honor her extensive career.
Sally has made a significant gift to the professorship initiative, and has been a loyal financial supporter of the college in other areas as well. She is a member of The Presidents Club of The University of Iowa, which recognizes the UI's most generous contributors.
Sally has also aided the College of Nursing in its mission with her time and expertise, serving on the Dean's Advisory Group and as chair of the Nursing Centennial Celebration Committee. In 1999, she became the first recipient of the UI College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement.
For years, Sally has tirelessly served the nursing profession with the same compassion and care she provided her patients. And generations of students and faculty in the College of Nursing will benefit from her generosity and commitment.
