What will you be doing in 2055? University of Iowa Professor Emeritus Jean A. Lakin (1982 Ph.D.) will be bringing beautiful music and better health care into the world.
A former professor in the College of Nursing, Jean honored the memory of her husband James E. Lakin -- director and professor in the School of Music in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for 21 years until his untimely death in 1988 -- by creating a legacy that will ensure that the couple's impact as teachers and community leaders will continue far into the future.
"Jim and I valued our careers as educators, but it was important to us to extend our work beyond the academic world," says Jean. "I like the idea of creating scholarships that will support future students who share our professional interests, as well as our commitment to linking the University and the community."
She adds, "I also know from experience how helpful such assistance can be, especially for graduate students with families."
Jean and James Lakin created two scholarships through two types of deferred gifts. The Lakins, like many people in their situation, wanted to make sure they had enough resources for their retirement and to provide support in case of unforeseen health and economic issues. They also wanted to provide future support for loved ones.
With those concerns in mind, they worked with their advisor and decided to make their gift in the form of a simple bequest and a charitable remainder trust.
The bequest allowed Jean and James to make their future commitment while maintaining control over their resources for current needs. The charitable remainder trust will provide income to a chosen beneficiary, in this case their son, with the eventual proceeds benefiting the University.
The James and Jean Lakin Oboe Scholarship will provide support for a promising UI graduate student studying oboe in the School of Music, with preference given to an individual interested in a teaching career that involves community outreach.
The James and Jean Lakin Nursing Scholarship will support a registered nurse who demonstrates leadership potential and is pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing degree at the UI, with preference given to those interested in a career in community health.
"We're so grateful to The University of Iowa for providing an excellent environment where we could lead satisfying careers in education," Jean explains. "I hope this gift will inspire others to honor colleagues or loved ones by creating a lasting legacy at the University."
