After Andrea Rebman spent time on a church mission trip working with doctors and nurses in Jamaica, she knew that nursing was her calling. Now the College of Nursing is helping her become a well-rounded health care professional.
With the assistance of two UI scholarships -- the Eugene J. and Elsie E. Weyler Scholarship and the Class of 1940 Nursing Scholarship -- Andrea is learning the ins and outs of numerous nursing disciplines as she works in local hospitals. "I learn best in hands-on situations," she says, "so Iowa's intensive rotation schedule is perfect for me."
She's also learning leadership skills that are essential not just to her own career, but to the nursing profession as a whole. Her classmates elected her to a position on the University of Iowa Association of Nursing Students (UIANS), a professional organization that functions as student government within the college.
As a representative of UIANS, Andrea has been able to attend state and national conventions of similar organizations -- the sort of opportunity that annual Nursing Progress Fund gifts help provide students.
At these conferences, Andrea meets with nursing students from other institutions. At the state convention, her fellow attendees awarded her with a scholarship because of her idea for a mentor program pairing incoming UI nursing students with upperclassmen -- a program the college put into effect in the 2002-2003 school year.
She also has had the opportunity to compare her experiences with those of students from other schools -- and she feels very good about being a UI student. "I've realized what a great education the UI is giving me," she says. "I'm very thankful for the opportunity."
