Danae Cole '09 Nursing

Hometown: Des Moines

Danae Cole believes in giving back. And she knows that her experiences in the University of Iowa College of Nursing will help her do just that.

The Des Moines native chose to attend the UI College of Nursing because she felt it was the right place for her to hone her leadership and service skills.

"During my senior year of high school, I was offered early admission to the college, and I decided to come here because the program was so good -- and because I knew it would prepare me to accomplish my goals," Danae says.

Those goals include traveling the world and working in a community where she can help those in need. Since starting in the college, Danae has volunteered at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, visiting with patients in the intermediate pulmonary care clinic.

Generous private support for the college has helped her make time for these kind of volunteer activities, which enhance her classroom and clinical experiences.

She is the recipient of the Florence Maytum Memorial Scholarship -- established in memory of 1930 UI nursing graduate Florence A. Maytum and awarded to a northwest Iowa student with good academic standing -- and the Susan K. Code Scholarship, which is a need-based scholarship for undergraduate students with accomplishments in civic activities established by Susan K. (1979 B.S.N.) and Andrew W. (1980 B.B.A., 1981 M.B.A.) Code of Hinsdale, Illinois, in 1998.

Danae is grateful for the fact that private support has allowed her to devote herself to learning everything she can in her classes -- including anatomy, which has been her favorite course so far -- and she understands that private gifts help throughout the college, providing everything from up-to-date labs and classrooms to leadership opportunities.

"Receiving these scholarships has made it possible for me to concentrate on my studies without worrying about having to find a part-time job," Danae says. "This has allowed me to pursue all my goals, and thanks to contributors, I'll also be able to give back to others someday."
