The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums
Through everything from sloth bones and bird songs to political documents and ancient maps, the UI's Pentacrest Museums -- the Museum of Natural History and Old Capitol Museum -- bring the past vividly to life for scholars and schoolchildren alike.
Museum of Natural History
Founded in 1858, the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History is the oldest university museum, and second-oldest museum of any kind, west of the Mississippi River. Located in Macbride Hall on the UI Pentacrest, many of the museum's collections rank with those of the top museums in North America.
Old Capitol Museum
Since 1857, when it was deeded to the still-young University of Iowa, Old Capitol Museum has served as the University's most recognizable and enduring symbol. This elegant edifice is as much as symbol of our state as a flagship for our University, having played a prominent role in Iowa history even before statehood was achieved in 1846.
UI students and faculty, schoolchildren from around the state, and citizens of all ages use the Pentacrest Museums as valuable resources for research, education, and outreach. Your gifts support important preservation and programming! Make your gift online now!
