Privacy Policy of the UI Foundation

Welcome to the University of Iowa Foundation's Internet site. Your right to privacy is very important to us. We recognize that providing us with personal information is an act of trust. Therefore, to supplement the donor-privacy protections provided by Iowa law, the UI Foundation has created a privacy policy to protect your personal information. This policy covers Web site(s) owned or operated by The University of Iowa Foundation. We encourage you to take the time to read this privacy policy and those of any Web site you visit.

The University of Iowa Foundation (Foundation) was established in 1956 as an I.R.C. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to increase private gift support to The University of Iowa. The University of Iowa Foundation is committed to building positive, high-trust relationships with its contributors and prospective contributors; providing performance excellence; and operating with the highest ethical standards.

We adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights policy developed by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, and the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

The Foundation is required by Iowa law to protect the confidentiality of private, non-public contributor information. Respect for our contributors' right to privacy is a basic standard of integrity for all Foundation activities.

To maintain contact with alumni and friends of the University, the Foundation manages a Web site, www.uiowafoundation.org. In general, when you visit our Web site and access information, you remain anonymous. We do not require you to register or provide personal information in order to view our site.

The Foundation tracks Web usage and non-personally identifiable information (that is, information that can be traced to a single, personally identifiable individual) to evaluate how well our Web pages are reaching and serving the needs of visitors. The Foundation does not sell or distribute any contributor and/or prospective contributor information to individuals or organizations outside The University of Iowa.

There are occasions when we will ask for additional information from you. We do this to better understand and respond to your needs, and to provide you with services that may be valuable to you. For example, personally identifiable information will be collected when you submit an online request for a printed publication.

Personal information also is required when an individual makes an online gift. The information you provide on this form will be used for the purpose of crediting you correctly for your gift.

The University of Iowa Foundation may disclose user information in special cases when we have reason to believe that disclosing this information is necessary to identify, contact, or bring legal action against someone who may be causing injury to or interference with (either intentionally or unintentionally) the Foundation's rights or property or anyone else that could be harmed by such activities. The Foundation may disclose user information when we believe in good faith that the law requires it.

The following questions and answers address specific issues associated with the Foundation's online privacy practices.

What information does the Foundation gather by tracking the use of its Web pages?

If you visit our Web site and do not voluntarily enter your contact information, the Foundation does not track personal information about you such as your name and e-mail address. If you volunteer to provide information about yourself to make an online gift or change your address, the Foundation will securely record that information for internal administrative purposes only. We do track how many "hits" our site receives, the average time users spend per page, and other general, non-personally identifiable information about how visitors are using the site.

If I voluntarily make a gift to The University of Iowa online, how will the Foundation use that information?

The UIF Web site has one area where visitors can voluntarily enter their contact information and make a contribution -- the "Make an Online Gift" section where you can designate a credit card gift to the University of Iowa. The Foundation enters the information you provide -- excluding your credit card number -- into our secure donor database so that we have your gift history or change of name and/or address record.

Is it safe to make a gift online?

Yes. The "Make an Online Gift" page is a secure page that encrypts your private information, including credit card numbers, for your protection. Read more about how the Foundation's online giving site works.

Does The University of Iowa Foundation share or sell the information it gathers?

To respect your privacy, the UI Foundation does not sell any of its donor or alumni lists. Personal and financial information pertaining to our contributors is not disclosed by the UI Foundation except as may be required by law.  Please know that the UI Foundation may disclose certain donor and gift information upon request consistent with our General Policy on Information Sharing available at http://www.uifoundation.org/about/faq/information-sharing.shtml.

By using this site, you signify your agreement to the terms and conditions of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please do not use this site.

Due to the rapidly evolving technologies on the Internet, we may occasionally update this policy. All revisions will be posted to this site. A revised Privacy Policy will apply only to data collected subsequent to its effective date.
