The University of Iowa College of Public Health
On July 1, 1999, The University of Iowa founded the College of Public Health -- the first new college established at the University in 50 years -- with the aim of developing a nationally recognized, comprehensive resource for the study and practice of public health. In establishing this college, the University and the state of Iowa signaled their renewed commitment to the fundamental principles of public health: community-based measures to prevent injury and disease and create healthier communities.
While clearly a new beginning, the establishment of the College of Public Health reflects a tradition of public health teaching, research, and service at The University of Iowa dating back more than 100 years. Control of communicable diseases, the safety of water and milk supplies, the health and safety of farmers and others living in rural areas, monitoring of cancer and birth defects, injury prevention, and enhanced sanitation are just a few examples of University-led public health efforts over the past century.
The College of Public health offers these degrees:
- Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.)
- Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)
- Master of Science (M.S.)
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
