Quick Links for Friends of the UI
This page offers answers to questions and links to areas of the UI Foundation site that typically interest friends of The University of Iowa.
Why support Iowa?
The role of Iowa's public universities is to make baccalaureate and advanced degrees accessible and affordable to all Iowans. The UI also provides services to the entire state and conducts world-class research. Only through a strong partnership embracing the state, the University, and its students, friends, and alumni can the UI continue to fulfill its mission and serve the people of Iowa.
State support provides only 13.5 percent of the UI's $2.2 billion budget (FY2005 statistics). A crucial part of the remainder comes through donations from loyal alumni and friends. These funds provide support for facilities, equipment, student aid, the recruitment and retention of outstanding
professionals, and for centers and programs that would not be possible otherwise.
How does the UI help the state and nation?
The University of Iowa touches the lives of Iowans in each of Iowa's
99 counties, including through the following programs:
- Health care clinics in communities throughout the state
- More than 700,000 patient visits at various UI Health Care sites
- Arts Share: visits to schools in many Iowa communities
- Distance learning/continuing education
- Services performed by the University Hygienic Laboratory, the Office of the State Archaeologist, and Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety & Health
UI graduates provide service and leadership to Iowa communities, and to communities all across the nation. The UI's 11 colleges graduate 50 percent of Iowa's physicians, 80 percent of its dentists, 60 percent of its pharmacists, 50 percent of its baccalaureate trained nurses, K-12 teachers for all of its school districts as well as a high percentage of the state's leaders and employees in business, industry, and other critical areas.
But the UI's influence extends far beyond Iowa's borders. To cite just a few examples:
- UI researchers within the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine are working on new treatments and cures for some of the world's most stubborn diseases, from cancer to cystic fibrosis, and breakthroughs happen daily
- Graduates of the UI's famed Writer's Workshop have been producing Pulitzer Prize-winning novels and other works for decades, enriching the lives of readers all over the world
- Specialists in the UI College of Education are pioneers in today's critically important fields of testing and evaluation
- Faculty at the UI College of Law are vocal participants in the national discourse on issues that range from the death penalty to international commerce
In short, your gift to any one of these or countless other programs at The University of Iowa will have an impact not just on the UI campus, but in the lives of individuals, families, and communities all across the globe.
