“Not worrying about my finances has allowed me to focus more on academics and get involved on campus.”

alexis-cloughWhen Alexis Clough, of Charles City, Iowa, came to the University of Iowa for a campus visit, it was a transformative experience. “When we were done, I remember telling my dad: ‘This is it. I found my place. It feels like home,’” says Alexis.

After applying and gaining acceptance to the UI, Alexis started to get ready for the big move. She also applied for scholarships and attended Charles City High School’s annual Senior Recognition Night. Alexis was shocked to hear her name called for the Tye and Cathy Darland Scholarship. The scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition at the UI, is awarded to a student from Charles City, Iowa. Funds from the scholarship are renewable to the recipient for up to three additional years as long as a minimum grade point average is maintained.

“After hearing my name called, I was completely surprised,” says Alexis. “And then when I heard how much the scholarship covered, I wanted to cry. I was so incredibly thankful. I worked hard in high school, but receiving this scholarship from Tye and Cathy has been amazing. I couldn’t thank my teachers enough for supporting me and nominating me for this scholarship.”

In 2012, Tye and Cathy Darland awarded their first full tuition scholarship to a Charles City graduating senior: Emily Miller. Alexis Clough was the second recipient of the scholarship, but because of a recent gift to the UI from the Darlands, a second full tuition scholarship will be awarded to a Charles City graduating senior. Now, the scholarship will be available on a biennial basis.

For Alexis—who babysat and worked at a local restaurant, The Pub on the Cedar, during high school—the scholarship has been a lifesaver. “I haven’t owed anything for my first year at Iowa,” says Alexis. “Not worrying about my finances has allowed me to focus more on academics and get involved on campus.”

Tye and Cathy Darland were raised in Charles City and are 1982 graduates of Charles City High School. The Darlands—who reside in Atlanta, Georgia, and are both UI graduates—are passionate about assisting students from their hometown in achieving their academic goals by offsetting the cost of tuition. The next Tye and Cathy Darland Scholarship will be awarded in 2018 to one Charles City High School graduating senior.
