“Our students—me included—really understand and appreciate what donors do for the University of Iowa...”

Anthony Lehnertz of Iowa City, Iowa, understands the impact philanthropy has on the University of Iowa campus. As president of the Student Philanthropy Group (SPG), Lehnertz has the opportunity to interact with donors while serving as a UI ambassador. He credits the philanthropic support of donors for giving him the opportunity to teach other students on campus the importance of giving back. It’s why he’s been so involved with the University of Iowa foundation and campus philanthropy. “It has been great seeing how happy donors get from helping students, like myself, afford a better education.”

Anthony is the recipient of the Tatia Williamson Scholarship, established in 2004 by Brian Williamson (1995 B.S.), in memory of his wife Tatia Williamson (1995 B.A.). Brian Williamson set up this fund to support a student employee who had worked at the University of Iowa Foundation for more than two years, since both he and Tatia were student employees at the foundation. “I feel honored to have been awarded this scholarship since it recognizes the importance of student employees at the foundation,” said Lehnertz. “This scholarship has motivated and allowed me and others to do the best work possible and never settle for mediocrity.”

Currently a senior majoring in finance, Anthony is a fifth generation Hawkeye with UI roots dating back to 1921. Outside of SPG he is heavily involved in intramural sports, and is a member of Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.). Anthony has worked at the University of Iowa Foundation for more than three years as both a development intern and a finance clerk. After graduating in May 2016, he hopes to either continue his work in fundraising at a college foundation or go into investor relations with a financial firm.

Thanks to Anthony’s involvement with the foundation he is able to directly see the positive effects of private support and how it helps students all over campus. “Our students—me included—really understand and appreciate what donors do for the University of Iowa,” said Lehnertz. “As state appropriations continue to decrease, students will continue to need the philanthropic support of donors to maintain the high quality of education that is expected at the University of Iowa.”
